COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Competing in her final NCAA Championship, University of Alaska Fairbanks senior
Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, PA) won her first individual smallbore NCAA championship at the 2006 NCAA Rifle Championships at the Olympic Training Center on Friday.
The 2003 individual champion in the air rifle, Beyerle was the top shooter to qualify for the afternoon's individual final match against the top-eight shooters from the smallbore relay competitions.
Entering the individual final with a five point lead over James and Joseph Hall from Jacksonville State, Beyerle shot a 97.5 to hold off Shannon Wilson from Ole Miss by an aggregate score of 690.5 to 688.5.
"I walked in realizing it's my last year and I made the decision that I just wanted to have fun. I saw there was no reason why I could not come in and shoot well and have fun in the process," said a triumphant Beyerle after the competition.
On her ninth shot of the finals, Beyerle shot an 8.1 (out of a possible 10.8), giving Wilson a window in which to catch her on the final shot. However, Beyerle slammed the door, posting a 10.1 on her final shot to capture the title.
"Jamie is one of the top shooters in the world and she proved it Friday," said UAF head coach
Dan Jordan. "For her senior year and final match, it's a good lead heading into the World Championships and hopefully the Olympics in 2008."
In the team competition, the Nanooks finished second to Jacksonville State in the smallbore team competition. Jacksonville State posted an aggregate score of 2,339 to UAF's 2,329.
However, due to the fact that Jacksonville State did not qualify a team of shooters for tomorrow's air rifle competition, the Nanooks are first overall in the aggregate team standings and are the team to beat for the national championship.
Freshman
Christian Lejon (Umea, Sweden) posted a 583, junior
Matt Rawlings (Wharton, TX) posted a 580 and despite a loose sight early on in his relay, freshman
Mattias Dierolf (Uttenhofen, Germany) checked in with a 580.
The 2006 Championships, hosted by USA Shooting and the United States Air Force Academy conclude on Saturday, March 11 with three air rifle relays, followed by the individual final.
