FAIRBANKS, AK - Sophomore netminder
Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK/Victoria-BCHL) has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Reebok Goaltender of the Week after backstopping the University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey team to a 4-3 victory over No. 1 ranked Miami at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio last Friday night (Feb. 3).
Rogers recorded a career-high 41 saves, outdoing his previous career-best of 40 saves, which he notched against Nebraska-Omaha the previous weekend in Fairbanks (Jan. 28), en route to his third victory in net against a No. 1 ranked team.
For his part in the Nanooks victory over the RedHawks, he was awarded the game's Perani Cup first star honors giving him the team lead in Perani Cup points with 14.
Earlier this season, the Fairbanks native turned away 33 shots when UAF faced then-ranked No. 1 Minnesota at Mariucci Arena (Oct. 14), and went on to stop 34 Wolverine shots on goal when then-ranked No. 1 Michigan visited Fairbanks on Oct. 28.
With a perfect 3-0 record against the nation's best, Rogers has a goals-against average of 2.61, and a .931 saves percentage against the top seeded teams in the country.
It is the second time this season, and fifth time in his career that Rogers has been recognized with the POW honors. His first award this season came the week of Oct. 17, after UAF defeated and tied Minnesota on the road. UAF's freshman goalie
Chad Johnson (Calgary, AB/Brooks-AJHL) is the only other Nanook who has received a conference weekly honor this season, and he was also recognized the week of Oct. 17 as the CCHA's Rookie of the Week.
