Durango, CO - It was a tale of two halves for the Alaska women's basketball team Friday night in an 83-66 loss to Adams State in the opening game of the Fort Lewis Iron Horse Classic. The Nanooks (1-1) saw a one-point halftime lead slip away in the second half as Adams State (1-2) took control and outscored the Nanooks by 18 points over the final 20 minutes.
The Grizzlies connected on 16 of 27 shots in the second half, while the Nanooks struggled to 39 percent from the field. Adams, which shot just two free throws in the first half, made 17-of-20 in the second and outscored Alaska 53-35 after the break. Adams forward Ashley Chambers nailed 3 of 5 threes and tallied 15 points in the second half surge.
Junior guard Kari Reabold (Fairbanks, AK) led UAF with a game-high 24 points, three assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Sheena Brown (Fairbanks, AK) added 11 points. Chambers led Adams with 21 points, six assists and four steals, while Brandie Telfer and Isil Ozkan had 15 points apiece.
The Nanooks square off with host Fort Lewis today at 5:00 p.m. AST in Whalen Gymnasium to close their road trip. Alaska then returns to the friendly confines of the Patty Center for the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational Nov. 24 and 25.
