Nanooks Sign Estonian Skier Pakk to Class of 2007

Nov. 13, 2006

FAIRBANKS, AK - Alaska Nanook ski coach Scott Jerome announced Monday that Robert Pakk has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the ski team in fall of 2007.

A native of Tartu, Estonia, Pakk will enroll at University of Alaska Fairbanks as a sophomore in the fall and have four years of eligibility. The first signee in the class of 2007, he joins fellow Tartu natives Henri Soom and Vahur Teppan on the Nanooks roster.

"They all skied for the same club," Jerome said. "Robert wanted to sign last year but we didn't have room. He's trained on his own this year and will be a welcome addition next year."

Pakk attended Tarvu University as a part-time student last year but will transfer with four full years of skiing eligibility. Skiing in the 15 kilometer Classical race at the 2006 Estonian National Championships, Pakk placed 33rd. In March 2006, Pakk skied in the 10K Classic in Albu, Estonia and earned 138.85 FIS (International Ski Federation) points, while beating future Nanook teammate Soom by 54 seconds.

Pakk is the son of Inge, a piano teacher, and Peeter, an Olympic shooting coach. Peeter Pakk competed for Estonia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as a skeet shooter.
