SOLDIER HOLLOW, UT - University of Alaska Fairbanks senior
Johanna Turunen (Joensuu, Finland) finished ninth overall and second among collegians in the women's 5km skate race on the final day of the United States National Cross Country Ski Championships at Soldier Hollow on Sunday.
Senior
Pavla Havlova (Jince, Czech Republic) finished 17th overall and was fourth among collegians. Turunen finished the course in 15:31.8 and Havlova crossed the line in 15:50.1.
Freshman
Julia Coulter (Traverse City, MI) finished 23rd overall (15:52.5) and eighth among collegians. Freshman
Elisabeth Habermann (Soldotna, AK) finished 70th overall (16:44.0).
For the men's team, sophomore
Marius Korthauer (Bonndorf, Germany) was the top Nanook finisher, placing 32nd overall, 11th among collegians. Korthauer finished the course with a time of 27:55.2.
Senior
Jonas Tetlie (Kabelvaag, Norway) finished 54th overall (28:43.9), junior
Bart Dengel (Valdez, AK) was 70th (29:06.5) and senior
Erik Wickstrom (Boras, Sweden) finished 108th (29:59.3).
Burke Mountain Academy's Liz Stephen and Kikkan Randall, representing the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Club each crossed the line with a time of 14:48.7 and tied for the women's championship. Randall won the sprint gold medal Thursday and the 10K classic technique crown on Saturday.
Subaru Factory Team member Ivan Babikov crossed the line first in the men's race with a time of 25:08.5, however Team Rossignol's James Southam (25:38.2) was awarded the gold medal because only U.S. skiers are eligible for medals.
The UAF ski teams return to action on Jan 21-22 when the Nanooks travel to Coleraine, MN for the NorAm Super Tour series. The meet will also serve as a qualifying event for the Central Collegiate Ski Association and NCAA Championships.
