Men's & Women's Skiing Claim First and Second Spots at Telemark

CABLE, WI - The University of Alaska Fairbanks men's and women's ski teams continued their winning ways at the Telemark NorAm SuperTour stop in Cable, WI on Saturday. The women's team took four of the top-six spots in the collegiate standings and the men's team took four of the top-nine positions in the college ranks. Skiing at the Telemark Resort, the women competed in a 5km classic race, while the men competed in a 10km classic race. Collegiate skiers were also scored towards Central Collegiate Ski Association and NCAA qualifying. For UAF head coach Scott Jerome, it's hard not to be happy with the way his teams have performed in recent weeks. "Needles to say, it was a very successful day for our program. To have four skiers from each team finish in the top-10 is pretty awesome," said Jerome. Sophomore Marius Korthauer (Bonndorf, Germany) has not lost a classic race this month, picking up his third victory in the collegiate standings. M. Korthauer finished fourth overall with a time of 28:48.0. Junior Bart Dengel (Valdez, AK) finished second among collegians with a time of 29:56.3 and was 15th overall. Also posting top-10 finishes amongst the collegians was senior Jonas Tetlie (Kabelvaag, Norway) who finished sixth (30:21.0) and was 21st overall. Senior Erik Wickstrom (Boras, Sweden) placed ninth (30:36.7) and was 25th overall. Senior Harald Aas (Eidsvoll, Norway) finished 27 among collegians (33:46.1) and was 62nd overall. For the women's team, seniors Johanna Turunen (Joensuu, Finland) and Pavla Havlova (Jince, Czech Republic) finished first and second in the college standings and also finished in the top-10 of the overall standings. Turunen (16:44.7) was fourth overall and Havlova (17:07.3) was eighth overall. Freshmen Aurelia Korthauer (Bonndorf, Germany) and Elisabeth Habermann (Soldotna, AK) finished fourth and sixth, respectively in the college ranks. A. Korthauer completed the course in 17:37.4 and finished 13 overall, while Habermann finished with a time of 18:05.5 and was 16th overall. Freshman Julia Coulter (Traverse City, MI) finished 16th among collegians (19:03.4) and 31st overall. "I could not be happier with the way our freshmen women have performed. Having Aurelia, Elisabeth and Julia with us has added so much depth to our team," said Jerome.
