UAF's Tyson Flaharty Named to WJC XC Ski Team

Tyson Flaharty Named to U.S. Junior Team FAIRBANKS, AK-For the second year in a row, a University of Alaska Fairbanks cross-country skier will help represent the United States at the World Junior Championships. Sophomore Tyson Flaharty (Fairbanks, AK) has been officially named to the United States team that will compete at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Rovaniemi, Finland March 21st through the 26th. Last year, he was a member of the U.S. team that competed in Stryn, Norway. Rick Kapala, who coaches for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation in Sun Valley, ID and is the head coach for the U.S. team, notified UAF Head Coach Scott Jerome of Flaharty's selection. According to Jerome, Kapala indicated that Flaharty would compete in the classic sprint, which is scheduled for March 23rd. Flaharty was chosen on the basis of his performance when the Nanooks competed in the U.S. National Championships in Midway, UT in January. "It's awesome, I'm really excited for Tyson," said Jerome. "Very few people in the country get the chance to compete at the world level. He did a good job at the U.S. National Championships for the second year in a row, and this will be a great experience for him. The skiers on the team are the top eight skiers under 20 years old in the country, and that says a lot about Tyson's skiing." "I'm really happy, because this is what I've been shooting for all year," said Flaharty. "It's very good competition, all the best juniors in the world are there. I was at this race last year, but I'm feeling quite a bit stronger right now. I have about a month to get ready." Flaharty is scheduled to leave for Finland on March 14th. -UAF SKIING-
