After trailing by 20 points over half way through the second period, the University of Alaska Fairbanks women's basketball team came back within one point of visiting Humboldt State with 35 seconds remaining in the game, but the Lumberjacks held strong to claim an 81-78 win Saturday afternoon at the Patty Center.
For the second consecutive night sophomore guard
Kari Reabold (Fairbanks, AK/Lathrop HS) turned in a strong performance, netting a game and career-high 20 points.
Freshman guard
Sheena Brown (Fairbanks, AK/Lathrop HS) and junior forward
Alice Stein (Fresno, CA/Reedley College) each chipped in 15 points apiece in the loss for the Nanooks. Senior forward
Jen Wasson (Eagle River, AK/Chugiak HS) also turned in a double-digit performance with 13 points.
Down the home stretch, the Nanooks used a nine point run to eventually cut their deficit to one point with just 35 seconds remaining.
With seven seconds left on the clock, UAF fouled Humboldt's Katie Wilder to stop the clock, but to their detriment she nailed both free throws, giving the Jacks the three point win.
The Lumberjacks built their first half lead off outstanding shooting going 9-for-13 (69.2%) from 3-point range, an effort the Nanooks struggled to match (2-for-5, 40.0%)
UAF out rebounded HSU, 36-26, and Stein had a game-high seven boards for the Nanooks.
Humboldt State's Katie Wilder paced the Jacks with 19 points and nine assists and Monique Coquilla added 15 points while Kelly Fay had 14 points.
The Nanooks (4-6, 1-1 GNAC) will open their 2006 schedule next Saturday when they continue GNAC action by hosting intra-state rival Alaska Anchorage at 5 p.m. in the Patty Center.
