Zinsli Breaks Three School Records As Swimming Falls to #6 CSU Bakersfield

ANCHORAGE, AK - Freshman Sam Zinsli (Kennewick, WA/Southridge HS) set three school records on Saturday afternoon as the University of Alaska Fairbanks swim team faced the sixth ranked Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners in a dual meet at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex Pool in Anchorage. The Nanooks were defeated 123-70. Zinsli set two of her records in one event, the 1,650yd freestyle. After 1,000yds, Zinsli's split time of 11:15.31 was good enough to set a new record in the 1,000, eclipsing the previous mark of 11:49.87. Zinsli finished the event with a time of 18:31.26, besting the previous record of 20:01.22. Both of the previous records were held by freshman Megan Humphrey (Fairbanks, AK/Lathrop HS). Zinsli broke her third record of the day in the 200yd individual medley, finishing in a time of 2:25.78, besting the mark of 2:29.93 set by freshman Joann Kump (Missoula, MT/Hellgate HS) at the 2005 Speedo Cup on Nov. 17. The Nanooks picked up victories by Kump in the 200yd breaststroke (2:40.32) and the 200yd freestyle relay team (1:49.59). The relay team consisted of junior Karin Wagner (North Pole, AK/North Pole HS), Humphrey, junior Rebecca George (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak HS/Central Washington) and sophomore Zoe Kjera (Fairbanks, AK/Lathrop HS). Junior Hilary Carlisle (Tigard, OR/Tigard HS) finished second in the 200yd butterfly (2:24.27), freshman Charlotte DeBruler (Cordova, AK/Cordova HS) finished third in the 200yd freestyle (2:13.77) and in her Nanook debut, sophomore Sarah Youngren (Soldotna, AK/Soldotna HS) finished second in the 200yd breaststroke (2:51.81). UAF swimming will return to action after the New Year when the team competes at the 26th Annual UCI/Ayres Hotel & Suites Invitational. The meet with take place Jan. 7-8. Tentatively schedule to compete are UC Irvine, Texas Christian, Purdue, Toledo, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Pepperdine, San Diego, San Diego State, Cal Lutheran, Cal Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Biola, and Colorado College.
