Hockey Drowned by Lakers

SAULT STE. MARIE - The University of Alaska Fairbanks met defeat against Lake Superior State University Friday night, falling 4-2 at Taffy Abel Arena in Game 1 of this weekend's Central Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Nanooks trailed 3-0 on two power-play goals and a short-handed marker by the Lakers before they got on the board. Dominic Osman opened the scoring for the Lakers with a power-play goal at 17:14 of the first period. Trent Campbell made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 8:30 of the second period. McJannet stole the puck in the neutral zone and scored an unassisted short-handed marker to make it 3-0 at 15:16 of the second period. Freshman Kyle Jones (Airdrie, AB/Trail-BCHL) answered for UAF at 16:57, but McJannet regained LSSU's three-goal lead with an even-strength goal at 7:11 of the third period. The Nanooks pulled sophomore goalie Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK/Victoria-BCHL) in favor on an extra attacker with 1:15 left in the game and UAF's Darcy Campbell (Airdrie, AB/Olds-AJHL) cut the Lakers' lead to 4-2 by scoring a 6-on-4 power-play goal with 35 seconds remaining. Rogers (3-4-0) turned aside 28 shots for the Nanooks, who were out-shot 32-23, while LSSU's goalie Jeff Jakaitis totaled 21 saves. The Nanooks were 1-for-6 on the power play, while LSSU finished 2-for-8. UAF (6-5-2 overall, 4-4-1 CCHA) was out shot for the fifth consecutive game, by a 32-23 margin. With the loss, UAF fell one point behind LSSU in the league standings. The teams play again Saturday at 3:05 p.m. AST at Taffy Abel Arena and are fighting to stay among the CCHA's top six.
