FAIRBANKS, AK - The University of Alaska Fairbanks swim team was defeated by Cal State Bakersfield, 105-99 on Friday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex Pool in Anchorage. The Roadrunners were ranked sixth in the season-opening NCAA Division II Poll by collegeswimming.com.
The Nanooks started the meet strong with the 200yd medley relay team breaking the school record with a time of 1:58.75. UAF finished third in the event, just eight one-hundredths of a second out of second place. The relay team was comprised of junior
Karin Wagner (North Pole, AK/North Pole HS), freshman
Joann Kump (Missoula, MT/Hellgate HS), junior
Hilary Carlisle (Tigard, OR/Tigard HS) and freshman
Sam Zinsli (Kennewick, WA/Southridge HS).
Freshman
Megan Humphrey (Fairbanks, AK/Lathrop HS) was the top finisher in the 1,000yd freestyle, finishing fourth with a time of 11:55.52. Junior captain
Rebecca George (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak HS/Central Washington) finished fifth and set a new lifetime best with a time of 12:36.29.
In the 200yd freestyle, Zinsli was the runner-up with a time of 2:01.04, followed by senior
Courtney Walinski (Littleton, CO/Littleton HS/Metro State College of Denver) in fourth place with a time of 2:11.19.
Wagner was the runner-up in the 50yd freestyle with a time of 26.80. Kump was third in the 400yd IM, posting a time of 5:19.18.
Carlisle and Zinsli finished second in the 100yd butterfly and 100yd freestyle, respectively. Carlisle checked in with a time of 1:03.05 and Zinsli finished in 56.88.
In the 100yd backstroke, freshman
Amanda Hartman (Valdez, AK/Valdez HS) swam a new lifetime best with a time of 1:06.12, lowering her time by three seconds since the beginning of the season.
Zinsli capped of the day for the Nanooks by breaking the record in the 100yd breaststroke with a time of 1:14.20.
The two teams will return to the pool on Saturday, Dec. 3 as the teams compete in another dual meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. (AST) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex Pool in Anchorage.
