(Fairbanks)-Former UAF Men's Basketball player Jason Williams has signed a professional contract to play basketball with Santiago de Compostela, in Spain's 3rd division. Williams was a standout for the Nanooks during the 01-03 seasons.
Williams was voted team MVP after his Senior year. He averaged 15ppg and 10.2 rpg, while shattering every shot blocking record during his two seasons. He helped lead the Nanooks to their historical Top of The World Classic Championship and was voted to the TOWC all tournament team. Williams will join Branden Bieber (Australia), Sanjey Noriega (Mexico/Argentina), Bogdan Popescu (Germany/Belgium) as former Nanooks to move onto the pro ranks the past four years.
"We are very excited to see Jason pursue his dream to be a professional basketball player," said UAF Head Coach Frank Ostanik. "Jason had other opportunities following his senior season, but he chose to stay in Fairbanks and get his degree. I couldn't be more proud of him. To complete school, and now be able to go play professionally is icing on the cake. It tells you all you need to know about him as a human being."
