Oleson, A. Smith Honored at Debeni Classic

Oleson Named MVP, Andrew Smith All-Tournament at Debeni Classic ARCATA, CA-Senior guard Brad Oleson (North Pole, AK/North Pole HS/Peninsula College) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks' men's basketball team was named Most Valuable Player and junior forward Andrew Smith (Anchorage, AK/Bartlett HS) was named to the All-Tournament Team at the James Debeni Classic, hosted by Humboldt State Saturday and Sunday. Oleson and Smith led the Nanooks to a 2-0 record at the classic. UAF defeated Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus. In two games, Oleson led UAF with 53 points, He scored 33 points in Saturday night's victory against SSU, making 10 of 16 shots from the field, including five of seven from three-point range. He also added 10 steals, including six in Sunday's game, one short of the Nanook single-game record he currently shares with Head Coach Frank Ostanik. Smith scored 39 points in the two games, leading the Nanooks with 23 points against the Warriors on Sunday. He had five blocked shots. "Brad was Brad, he scores when you need him to score, he makes big plays at big times, and all the coaches were very impressed with the way Brad played," said UAF Assistant Coach Rich Mendoza. "Andrew played very well in both games, and he made some big plays that helped us keep our lead." The Nanooks are off this week. They will return to action when they play Nyack and Ohio Valley at the Glacier Classic at Alaska Anchorage December 30th and 31st. -UAF BASKETBALL-
