The University of Alaska Fairbanks, the six-time NCAA National Rifle Champions, set a school record in the smallbore division Friday night against the University of Texas - El Paso at the United States Air Force Academy. The Nanooks are in Colorado Springs, CO for the weekend to compete against UTEP, the University of Nebraska Lincoln and the Air Force Academy.
The Nanooks beat the UTEP Miners Friday by an aggregate score of 6302-6174.
Matt Wallace led the Nanooks with an 1192 in the smallbore division, pacing UAF to a record total of 4758, one point better than the previous school mark. Wallace shot scores of 400 in the prone position, 397 in the kneeling and 395 in the standing. Jamie Beyerle added an 1191 with Matt Rawlings shooting 1189 and Karl Olsson posting a total of 1186.
Rawlings led the team in the air rifle competition, setting the way with a 396. Beyerle shot 392 and Karl Olsson posted a 388. Karen Gerde had the final UAF air rifle score with a 368.
Leah Wilcox led the University of Texas - El Paso with an 1178 in the smallbore division. She was helped by Sarah Paoletta with an 1165 and Rachel Glenn at 1162. Raichele Smith fired an 1144. UTEP shot 1525 in the air rifle and was led by Paoletta with a total of 385. Wilcox shot 384 and Glenn shot 379. Smith rounded out the scoring with a 377.
The Nanooks head back to the range on Saturday, January 10, to face the University of Nebraska. UAF knocked off Nebraska earlier this season when the Cornhuskers came to Fairbanks in October.
