WCHA Release
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – On Monday, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced that Alaska Nanooks hockey's sophomore goaltender
Anton Martinsson was named the Goaltender of the Week. It is Martinsson's first WCHA Player of the Week award of his career and fourth conference honor for the Nanooks this season.
This past weekend, Martinsson backstopped the Nanooks to their first conference road sweep of the season, defeating in-state rival Alaska Anchorage 7-2 on Friday (Dec. 8) before edging out the Seawolves 3-2 on Saturday (Dec. 9) to earn six WCHA points. The wins also secured the 2017-18 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup for the fifth-straight season.
Throughout the two-game series in Anchorage, Martinsson made 41 saves to boast a .911 save percentage and finishing the weekend with a 2.00 goals against average. The Klippan, Sweden native made 10 saves in Saturday's third period alone to clinch the cup and complete the sweep. Of his fellow conference netminders, Martinsson was the only goaltender to garner two wins on the weekend.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will enjoy the holiday break starting this week and resume conference play on Friday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 6, as they host the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in a two-game WCHA series at the Carlson Center. Puck-drop for both nights is scheduled for 7:07pm AKST.
