Senior guard Emmanuel Jenkins (Tacoma, WA) and junior forward Nashorn Maynard (Saint Paul's, Saint Kitts) received honorable mention to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference team for the 2009-10 men’s basketball season.  The league also announced on Monday that Jenkins earned GNAC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending March 7.

The No. 13/14 Alaska Nanooks used a 4-1 win to complete the weekend sweep of the Western Michigan Broncos in the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs Saturday night at the Carlson Center and advance to the second round, where they will play a best-of-three series on the road against Northern Michigan, March 12-14, in Marquette, MI.

Alaska turned a 10-point second half deficit into a two point win on senior night in Fairbanks on Saturday afternoon. Nine different Nanooks found the scoring column as they also outscored Northwest Nazarene 36-16 in the paint in a 77-75 win.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics will begin its search for a new Head Coach for the Alaska Nanooks’ Women’s Basketball program. UAF Director of Athletics Forrest Karr announced a nationwide search for candidates will open on Monday, March 8, 2010.

Alaska was unable to send seniors Lakeshia Levi (Warner Robins, GA) and Ronisha Edwards (Compton, CA) away with wins as they were out-gunned by Northwest Nazarene 81-45 on Saturday afternoon at the Patty Center.  Levi led all scorers with 24 points, despite Alaska only shooting 27% from the field.

3.5.10 | Men's Ice Hockey

No. 13/14 Alaska got two points each from Kevin Petovello (Sparwood, BC, Victoria (BCHL)) and Derek Klassen (Whitehorse, YT, Ft. McMurray (AJHL)) to pace the Nanooks in a 4-0 victory over Western Michigan in the first game of the CCHA playoff at the Carlson Center.  Alaska threw 44 shots on net and Scott Greenham (Addison, ON, Oakville (OPJHL)) recorded his fourth shutout of the season stopping all 16 shots he faced.  The Nanooks got goals from Aaron Gens (Baudette, MN, Topeka (NAHL)), Nik Yaremchuk (St. Albert, AB, Sherwood Park (AJHL)), Dion Knelsen (Three Hills, AB, Drumheller (AJHL)) and Petovello  as nine Alaska skaters found the score sheet.  The Blue and Gold will look to sweep the Broncos tomorrow night when they meet for game two of the best-of-three series at the Carlson Center.  Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. AKT.
