FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Both 12th-ranked Fresno Pacific and Colorado Christian put on a show to open the 2013 Flint Hills Resources Alaska Nanook Classic but the Sunbirds (1-0), led by three with double-figure kills, hit .262 en route to a 3-1 win against the Cougars (0-1) Friday evening at the Patty Center.
Fresno clinched its season-opening win by taking the match by set scores of 25-15, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-22.
Rupia Inck accrued 18 kills and hit .326 (18-4-43) for the match and
Morghan Williams had 11 kills with a .526 (11-1-19) attack clip while
Rebecca Waller added 10 terminations and a .300 (10-4-20) hitting percentage.
Bissie DenHartog dished out 38 assists to go with 11 digs while
Hannah Butler led back row with a match-high 25 digs.
For CCU, returning All-American
Taylor Sturms registered a match-best 20 kills, a .269 (20-6-52) hitting clip, to go with 16 digs while
Mollie Bailey contributed 10 kills.
Jordan Kissman matched DenHartog with 38 helpers and a match-high five service aces. As a team, the Cougars were held to a .110 hitting percentage.
Both teams were active at the net as FPU edged in blocks, 11-10.
Fresno opens day two of the Nanook Classic at 11 a.m. against Humboldt State (1-0), which won 3-1 Friday night against host Alaska. Christian will take on Alaska (0-5) at 1 p.m. or 30 minutes following the FPU-HSU match in its second match of the season.
