FAIRBANKS – Junior guard
Benissa Bulaya (Sacramento, Calif./Communication) of the Alaska women's basketball program has been named the Era Alaska Nanook of the Week for the week ending Dec. 1, as selected by the Alaska media relations office.
Bulaya led the Nanooks (6-2) in scoring at the 2013 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational (Nov. 28-30) and a 2-1 record to finish in second place for the seventh time in the 12-year history of the event, matching their best finish.
She was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 12.0 points per game, including a game-best 18 points in Alaska's 12-point win over Lees-McRae on Friday. She hit 16-of-22 (.727) free throw attempts while also averaging 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per outing.
The Nanooks open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play this week as they play host to ninth-ranked Seattle Pacific Thursday at 7 p.m. and league-favorite Montana State Billings Saturday at 7 p.m.
Every week of competition during the 2013-14 athletic year, there will be an Era Alaska Nanook of the Week announced.
This week, women's basketball plays at home twice against the top two preseason teams, swimming heads to Federal Way, Wash., for the Husky Invitational, men's basketball battles Alaska Anchorage on Saturday to open GNAC play, men's and women's skiing will hit the trails against UAA in the Nordic Cup and hockey plays games one and two at UAA Friday and Saturday.
