Munson, Lees-McRae Defeat Dominican for Third-Place Finish in NSI

FAIRBANKS, Alaska —
An all-tournament-like performance from Alyssa Munson with 24 points and 10 rebounds helped carry Lees-McRae to an 82-70 win over Dominican University of California and a third-place finish in the 2013 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational Saturday at the Patty Center.
 
Munson added three blocks, a steal and an assist for the Bobcats (3-5). She finished the tournament averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The All-Tournament team will be announced following the championship game between Wayne State College and Alaska later Saturday afternoon.
 
Lees-McRae had three double-digit scorers in all. Kabrina Truesdale scored 17 while corralling six rebounds, grabbing three steals and dishing three assists. Layana De Souza scored 15, including going 10 for 13 from the free-throw line.
 
Dominican (CA)'s (0-7) Lauren Hyatt posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Marshall was also in double figures for the Penguins with 15 points. Salonika Quewon-Owens had five steals and four blocks to go with six points and six boards for the Penguins.
 
The Bobcats overcame an early one-point deficit with an 11-0 run that spanned 1 minute, 27 seconds and included six points from Truesdale and four from Munson. A 3-pointer by De Souza 1:46 later gave Lees-McRae an 11-point lead. Dominican (CA) would cut it to as close as three at 23-20 with 9:16 to play before halftime, but that was as close as they would get for the rest of the game.
 
Lees-McRae stretched its lead back to 11 with an 8-0 run and would get it to as much as 12 before settling for a 10-point, 40-30 halftime lead. The Bobcats' advantage would only dip below double digits once during the second half, as they would lead by as many as 18 during after the break.
 
Lees McRae finishes the 2013 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational with a 1-2 record to earn a third-place finish. Dominican (CA) finished the tournament 0-3 to finish fourth.
