FAIRBANKS – Wayne State College had a pair of players score more than 20 points and shot 57.4 percent as a team to down Lees-McRae 98-67 in game one of the 2013 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational on Thanksgiving Day at the Patty Center.
Jordan Spencer led the Wildcats (6-0) with a double-double as she tallied a team-best 23 points and game-high 13 rebounds.
Ashton Yossi also scored 21 points and hit four three pointers while
Ellen Hansen had 17 points with three triples.
WSC limited Lees-McRae to 40.9 percent shooting and 25 percent from beyond the arc while draining 10 three balls to finish 45.5 percent. The 'Cats also knocked down 83.9 percent of their free throws after going 26-for-31 from the stripe.
The Bobcats (2-4) were led by
Alyssa Munson, who scored a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds while
Kerri Belcher had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
WSC opened the game with the first eight points in 2:44 and surged out to an 18-2 lead with 14:07 to go in the first. The Wildcats extended the advantage past 20 points less than seven and a half minutes in and led by as many as 25 points.
Trailing 43-18, Lees-McRae starting knocking down shots and getting key stops to cut into the deficit. The Bobcats were able to put together an 18-2 run that spanned 4:09 to climb to within 45-36 with just over a minute left. Wayne State ended the frame with five in a row to go up 50-36 at the break.
The Wildcats began the second half with six in a row to extend it back to 20 and never led by less than 20 for the final 16:33. They led by as many as 36 points down the stretch en route to the win.
WSC will play Dominican (0-5) in game three of the tournament Friday at 2 p.m. while LMC will take on host Alaska (5-1) at 4 p.m. or 30 minutes after game three.
