FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Emporia State took care of business at the free-throw line and from downtown Saturday to fend off a gritty University of Mary team and earn a third-place finish in the 2013 GCI Alaska Invitational with a 79-68 win over the Marauders at the Patty Center.
Â
The Hornets (5-2) made 29 free-throws Saturday, 15 more than Mary (2-3), and shot 82.9 percent from the charity stripe. The team also made eight 3-pointers, going 8 for 13 from beyond the arc for a 61.5 percent clip – the second-best single-game performance in tournament history.
Â
The Hornets also shined defensively. Paul Bunch tallied four blocks to finish with a record 12 for the tournament. Terrence Moore finished the tournament with eight steals, tied for third-best all-time.
Â
Mary stayed close nearly the entire game despite not leading after the 14 minutes, 15 seconds mark in the first half. The Marauders only trailed by four points with 1:37 to play, but 10 points from the Hornets' Kaleb Wright in the final 68 seconds (eight free throws) and an 11-4 ESU run sealed the deal.

Moore and Wright led the charge for the Hornets from the free-throw line, going 12 for 14 and 12 for 13, respectively. Moore finished with 24 points and Wright poured in 18. Jevon Taylor went a perfect 4 for 4 from downtown for 12 points.

Mary had four players in double-digit scoring, led by Marc Musungayi's 16 points. Chris Mason finished with a double-double, tallying 14 points and pulling down 10 boards. Devan Douglas also had 14, while Brandon Tyler chipped in 11.
