MADISON, Wisc. – A strong showing in his first two collegiate starts last weekend earned freshman goaltender Davis Jones (St. Albert, Alberta/Elementary Education) the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week award, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Jones got the nod last weekend and went 1-0-1 in net for the Nanooks (2-1-1) to help lead them to their second straight Brice Alaska Goal Rush title. He accrued 54 saves, a 2.32 goals against average and a .915 save percentage (54/59) in his first two outings as a collegian.

In Friday's 3-2 come-from-behind victory over then-No. 12 Denver, Jones made 24 saves and made 24 saves on 26 shots faces. The following night, he electrified the more than 3,000 spectators at the Carlson Center, making extraordinary stops to help Alaska tie Western Michigan 3-3. He made 30 saves, 14 coming in the third period alone, in the tie on 33 shots faced and denied the Broncos a goal in all three rounds of the shootout to determine the tournament champion.

Jones is the second Nanook to be honored this season as sophomore defenseman Colton Parayko was tabbed the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15.

Senior forward Bryce Williamson of Bowling Green was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and three assists in the Falcons' 2-0-1 week while senior defenseman Zach Sternberg of Lake Superior State tallied a goal and two assists to be named Defensive Player of the Week.

Alaska closes the non-conference slate Oct. 25-26 when it hosts Mercyhurst at Patty Ice Arena. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. both nights and tickets are completely SOLD OUT for the weekend series.
