MANSFIELD, Texas
– Freshman Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Frontier Charter) became just the second Nanook in program history to qualify for a championship final as she finished second in the 100 butterfly preliminary race at the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday morning at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.

Adams set a new personal-best and varsity record in the fly after she hit the wall in 55.08 seconds. She joins former-Nanook Mariya Pavlovskaya (eight-time All-American) as the only individual in program history to race in a championship final.

“She's a very talented woman and very committed woman,” head coach Scott Lemley said. “We have had one make championship finals in the past (Pavlovskaya). I think Margot will be the same quality and is going to be a multiple All-American when her career is done.”

The Anchorage native will be positioned next to Grand Canyon's Mychala Lynch, who turned in a mark of 54.37 in the prelims, to rank first.

“She's going to have to be more relaxed on that first 25 [of the final] if she's potentially going to win this event,” Lemley said. “She's going to have to go 53 [seconds] to do it, which would be a big drop for her, but she has the potential so we'll see how she does.”

One other individual advanced to the consolation final during preliminaries as sophomore Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Albrecht Thzer Gymnasium) took 13th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.93.

On the relay side, the foursome of freshman Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/St. Mary's), Adams, freshman Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) and Heller all moved to the consolation final of the 200 freestyle relay with a 13th-place showing in 1:35.71. That time also broke the tandem's varsity record.

Lyons nearly advanced to the consolation final of the 400 individual medley, but missed out by less than three tenths of a second as she was 17th in 4:30.88. She also took 25th in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.78.

Summers had a nice morning in the pool as she registered a pair of personal-best times. She completed the 400 individual medley in 4:32.39, nearly six seconds faster than her seeded time, which was good for 20th. She also placed 24th in the 200 free with a personal-best mark of 1:53.57.

Thursday's finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. Live results and live web streaming of the championships are available through NCAA.com.
