FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team received a chance to participate in a one of a kind team building experience this past weekend, traveling to one of the more remote regions of Alaska to hike along the Gulkana glacier.
The expedition was made possible thanks to the UAF Outdoor Adventures department which plans and coordinates many such trips throughout the year.
Head coach Phil Shoemaker, assistant coach
Mallory Larranaga and 13 members of the 2011 Nanooks team spent Saturday wading through frigid glacial rivers, traversing rickety bridges and hiking rocky terrain en route to the glacier itself.
The team members got a chance to bond through the course of the trek and spent the night outdoors in tents near one of the glacial rivers.
"We've done something like this with the help of Outdoor Adventures for a couple of years now," said Shoemaker. "Some of the girls have never seen anything like this before and when you're out there sharing something like that the team bonding just happens on its own."
