MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-5, 0-0 GNAC) dropped its contest at Minnesota State Moorhead (4-1, 1-0 NSIC) 112-63 on Friday.
How it Happened
Chozen Horn-Young gave the 'Nooks an early 3-2 lead after sinking a three for their first points of the game, but a 9-2 run for the Dragons put the Nanooks in a six-point hole. Threes from Tamai Mancuso and Desiree Redfox helped the Blue & Gold cut the deficit to two, and Mancuso and Genevieve Velasquez kept the Nanooks within two thanks to a pair of makes from inside the arc. However, the hosts ended the quarter on an 11-1 run and took a 29-17 lead into the first quarter break.
Horn-Young began the second the same way she started the first for the Nanooks, knocking down a three for her second triple of the game. Amelia Brady and Alycia Shelley added two more baskets, but the Dragons scored the next six points without a Nanook's response to increase the deficit to 17. Emily Freeman and Ashlyn Waggoner added a pair of baskets from two-point range, but the 'Nooks entered halftime trailing 57-30.
The Dragons began the third by scoring the first eight points of the period. Waggoner ended the drought with a three, and Horn-Young followed up with a two-point jumpshot. However, an 11-0 run for the hosts put them up 78-35. Mancuso sank a pair of two-pointers, and Freeman added a three, but MSUM took a 90-46 lead into the final 10 minutes. Mancuso and Freeman added threes in the final period to put them both in double-figures.
