Kunyk Earns CCHA All-Rookie Team Honorable Mention

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Freshman center Cody Kunyk, who leads the Alaska Nanooks offensively, garnered Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Rookie Team Honorable Mention as announced Monday by the Michigan-based league.

He led the Blue and Gold with eight goals and 12 assists through 28 conference games and is tops on the season with 12-17--29 through 36 outings. His eight goals include one game-winner, one short-handed and two power-play tallies.

The 5-11 is tied for 17th in the nation for rookie points, averaging 0.81 per game and 17th among CCHA scorers. He is fourth among CCHA rookies for points in conference contests.

He is the first rookie to lead Alaska in scoring since the 2004-05 season, when Kyle Greentree was atop the scoring charts with 12-20--32.

Four schools had one student-athlete named to the 2011 CCHA All-Rookie Team, with Western Michigan and Notre Dame each having two selections. Thirteen freshmen garnered at least one vote.

Determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches, the team will be honored at the 2011 CCHA Awards on Thursday, March 17, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
