Eric Stang has been named the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball assistant coach for the upcoming season, head coach Clemon Johnson announced Monday. Stang joins the Nanooks with 12 years of coaching experience, including four at the NCAA Division I level.
Stang's most recent position was with the basketball program at Providence College in Rhode Island. He was in charge of NCAA compliance reporting, video scouting and film editing.
Prior to Providence, Stang was head coach at Whitefish High School in Whitefish, Mont., for two years and head coach and assistant athletic director for Eureka Public Schools in Eureka, Mont., for a year.
Stang has coached on the collegiate level as an assistant at Providence (2009-10), Montana State University (2005-06), Portland Community College (2003-05), Spokane Community College (2002-03), Gonzaga University (2000-02), and the College of Saint Scholastica (1998-99).
During his time with Gonzaga, Stang coached back-to-back West Coast Conference champion teams. The squad reached the NCAA tournament in both seasons and made it as far as the Sweet Sixteen in 2001.
“Eric's coaching experience and recruiting contacts separated him from the other candidates,” Johnson said. “His communication skills—vital in recruiting—were displayed during the interview process. Coaches from coast to coast called to praise the selection of Eric as the latest member of the Nanook family.”
He holds a masters degrees in sport and athletic administration from Gonzaga and another in education administration from Providence. He earned his bachelor's in history from Carroll College in Montana.
“Eric's experience at Division I programs Providence and Gonzaga will greatly benefit the Nanook basketball program,” Johnson said. “He is a winner on the court and an advocate of education off the court.”
