Schnurr Wins HPU Invite, Alaska men and women take 4th overall

Kaaawa, HI – Sophomore Theresia Schnurr took the top individual honor at the Hawaii Pacific University Invitational Saturday at Kaaawa Valley in a time of 17:58 and the Alaska Nanooks men's and women's cross country teams placed fourth overall. In the women’s 5K race, Schnurr earned her third victory in as many races. Junior Aurelia Korthauer finished next for the Blue and Gold, taking 15th overall in 19:29. Rookie Heather Edic finished 20th with a course time of 19:54, while Marit Rjabov (20:09), Maria Stensland (20:28), Jana Benedix (20:30) and Rebecca Konieczny (21:40) rounded out the Alaska finishers. BYU-Hawaii won the team title with 49 points, followed by Humboldt State (52), University of Hawaii-Monoa (77) and Alaska (86). In the men's action, the Nanooks placed fourth overall with 95 points in the 8K course. Newcomer Sam Tilly finished 14th overall at 26:45 to lead Alaska. Ray Sabo crossed the finish line almost twenty seconds later (27:04), and was followed by Einar Often (27:20), Mitch Chandler (27:38), John Parry (29:02) and Tyler Kornfield (29:20). BUYH's Brendan McMaster took top individual honors at 24:52, and Humboldt State won the team title with 21 points. Both Nanook teams return to action next Saturday, September 12, at the Apple Ridge Run hosted by Central Washington. Race time is set for 11:30 a.m. in Yakima, WA.
